What is acupuncture exactly?

Acupuncture is an important aspect of Chinese medicine. We now know that it has been

practiced for in China for over 3000 years. The goal of acupuncture is to rebalance the body's

energy so it can function at its highest efficiency. When our bodies are in balance, we are

healthy and vibrant.

Solid filiform needles are inserted into the body at acupuncture points that are located on

meridians that transverse and connect all aspects of our bodies. Think of your body as a closed

loop, and of meridians as the road way that directs your flow of energy. If your blood, body

fluids, and energy are not flowing smoothly, then at some point, an imbalance will begin to show

itself. This could take the form of headaches, menstrual cramps, mood swings, back pain etc.

Acupuncture can help regulate your body's function, remove blood stasis, and free the flow of

your energy so you can function better every day.

One interesting result of Acupuncture is the very deep relaxation that can happen. Many people

say to me that they feel they have had a four hour nap and tend to feel very clear headed and

focused the next day. This deep relaxation acts like a bit of a reset button. It can help you

handle life's ups and downs with more ease and grace. Who doesn't want that?

Another common question about Acupuncture is does it hurt?

The truth is sometimes it does. It is a needle, but it is hair thin needle. Most people are familiar

with hypodermic needles that actually have to cut you to draw blood or give you medicine. This

is not the case with acupuncture needles.

They are sterile, solid, thin one time use needles. Most times you won't even feel them go in, but

occasionally you will. Your body is also packed with moving energy, and when we access it with

acupuncture needles, amazing things happen and you will feel these sensations. These

sensations are called Da Qi or strong Qi. You could feel warmth around the needle or heat

spreading to your body, you might feel an achy sensation, you might feel energy travel through

your body.

You may start laughing uncontrollably. You could weep for no apparent reason. This is all great.

It is just your body releasing trapped or stagnant energy which will facilitate the healing process.

The truth is... if it were so painful and torturous, it wouldn't be nearly as popular as it is.
